What Are Macronutrients?
What are macronutrients? There are 3 key macronutrients which are protein, carbs and healthy fats. In addition you're body also needs water, minerals and vitamins to function at an optimal level.
The calories you need should come from the right amount of all 3 macro groups. The aim is to eat quality calories from nutrient dense foods and getting the balance of macros right helps the body to have better energy and better health.
To get the balance of macros right for you, write down your goal and plan macros around this. The macros you need will vary according to your goal which may be fat burning or building muscle.
The simplest way to count macros is to download a macro counting app to save doing maths everytime you plan your meals!
Protein helps to build muscle, it doesn't give a lot of energy but is more about providing structure to the body. Good sources of lean protein include meat, fish, lentils or tofu.
Carbs provide your body with energy. Aim for complex carbs like brown rice, oats and beans, fruits like watermelon and veg like cucumber and spinach. Complex carbs give your body a steady state of energy unlike simple carbs such as white bread, cakes and biscuits which provide an energy spike followed by burnout and should be consumed in moderation.
The body needs healthy fats to keep the metabolism balanced, for healthy cell growth and absorption of minerals. Fat is used by the body for energy and reserved energy stores. Good sources of fat include salmon or tuna, olive oil or nuts.
Getting the right balance of macros means you operate at an optimal level. The body burns fat, builds muscle and has better health and sustained energy throughout the day.
